About Our Board
The Board of Directors provides governance, strategic direction, and oversight for 2 Spirits in Motion Society. Board members bring forward expertise from their Nations, regions, and professional backgrounds to support the long-term stability of the organization and ensure that 2SiMS remains accountable to the communities it serves. Their role is to guide the society’s priorities, uphold its mandate, and support the ways 2S people can be represented at local, regional, and national levels.
The board helps create conditions for responsible decision-making by drawing on community experience, organizational knowledge, and the guidance shared through 2SiMS councils, membership, and regional engagement.
What Guides Our Decisions
The Board meets regularly to review organizational progress, discuss emerging needs, and provide direction on governance and national representation. Board members work closely with the Executive Director to ensure that internal systems, annual workplans, and strategic priorities reflect the commitments made to community.
Their role is not operational. Instead, the board maintains oversight, accountability, and continuity across years and leadership transitions. This includes monitoring risk, evaluating organizational performance, and supporting the structures that allow staff, councils, and youth to carry out their work effectively.
The Board also supports relationship-building with partners, funders, and regional organizations, helping ensure that 2SiMS remains connected to national conversations affecting 2S wellbeing.

The board’s work is informed by the voices of Elders, youth, matriarchs, partner organizations, and community members who participate in 2SiMS gatherings, consultations, and councils. Their decisions are led by what communities identify as important for safety, visibility, access, and wellbeing.
Our Approach To Governance
2SiMS governance is shaped by community direction and the teachings that guide our work. The Board of Directors operates through transparency, shared responsibility, respect, and accountability. These principles help ensure that decisions reflect the experiences of 2S people, the work of 2SiMS councils, and the priorities identified across gatherings and regional visits.
The board is part of the society’s broader governance structure, which includes the Elders Council, Youth Council, and Matriarch Council, Our Membership and The Executive Directors Circle. Together, these bodies support diverse representation and ensure that different perspectives inform organizational decisions.
