The Youth Council
About The Council
The Youth Council brings together Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, and LGBTQQIA+ youth from across the regions who want to shape the work of 2SiMS. Council members share what young people are experiencing in their home communities, schools, and workplaces, and help us understand what supports are needed.
The Council is part of our national governance structure. Youth work alongside Elders, Matriarchs, staff, and the Board to make sure our programs, gatherings, and advocacy reflect the realities of young 2S people today.
What The Youth Council Does
Shares what Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer youth are experiencing in their communities, and what supports are needed.
Helps shape youth-centred gatherings, medicine harvests, retreats, and learning spaces.
Advises on how our programs, communications, and campaigns can speak to youth in clear and accessible ways.
Supports planning for events such as youth summits, conferences, and national gatherings.
Offers insight on safety, inclusion, mental health, and community care from a youth perspective.
Works with staff, Elders, and Matriarchs to make sure youth priorities are reflected in our annual workplan.
Represents 2SiMS youth at select meetings, presentations, and public events when invited.
Who Is Our Youth Council
Our Youth Council includes Indigenous youth who:
Self-identify as Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, or 2SLGBTQQIA+
Come from a range of Nations, territories, and regions
Bring lived experience from urban, rural, and remote communities
Are involved in community work, education, language, arts, land-based activities, or advocacy
Council members are knowledge carriers in their own right. They bring teachings from their families, Nations, and communities, and they share how current issues affect youth on the ground. Together, they help 2SiMS respond in ways that are relevant, accountable, and youth-centred.
How Can Youth Get Involved
Youth can connect with the Council in different ways. Each year we invite new members to join through open calls, recommendations from community, and outreach at gatherings and events. Members usually commit for a set term and take part in regular online meetings, planning sessions, and occasional in-person activities when resources allow.
If you are a Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, or LGBTQQIA+ youth who is interested in the Council, you can connect with our team through the contact form or by emailing 2SiMS. We welcome youth who are new to organizing as well as those who already carry community responsibilities.
